Sunday, 8/18/2019 – Acadia National Park: Bubble Rock, Sand Beach, and Great Head Trail

After breakfast, we all boarded the Island Explorer bus and got dropped off at the parking lot for the Bubble Rock trails.  We hiked up to the famous Bubble Rock, where the views were somewhat limited due to the fog, but still amazing.

The boys wanted to try to push Bubble Rock over, but, of course, I wouldn’t let them.  In fact, I wouldn’t even let them climb down and touch the rock as it sits on the edge of a high cliff.

We sat at the summit of South Bubble and ate lunch with the gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains before climbing back down.  Scott enjoyed telling the people that hadn’t even climbed halfway up the somewhat steep trail that they were “almost there.”

We took the Island Explorer bus to Sand Beach next, which was even foggier, and walked across the beach to the Great Head Trail trailhead.  As we walked across the beach, we spotted a seal playing in the waters not too far out.  We were all super excited to watch the seal, as it would disappear in the water, then reappear and bob its head around.  It was so cool!

We climbed up Great Head Trail and found the views to be pretty obscured by the fog at first.

However, as we got to the highest vantage point, the fog began to clear, and the views were amazing.  Torsten made a friend, a boy named Luke, who was hiking with his parents and little sister.  We ended up hiking the rest of the way with them since the boys were having so much fun together.  We learned that they’re actually camping at the same campground as us!

When we returned to Sand Beach, Torsten insisted on playing in the sand.

When we got back to the campground, I took the car up the road to the Happy Clam to purchase three pounds of clams.  I made clam chowder from scratch, along with poutine for dinner.  It was good, but not as good as the chowder we had at C-Ray’s Lobster (and a LOT more work).

We ended the evening with a campfire and s’mores.
